Wrong guys. If your swimming like a dog and moving, then its considered swimming. Not just the floating part, you actually have to be getting somewhere.

As long as you are moving towards or away from something in the water using your arms and legs than you are swimming, (feet off the floor of the pool not walking). You don't have to have your face in the water, plenty swimmers front crawl with their face out of the water. For example, lifeguards when then they are swimming to a vicitm in distress.

If you are just standing in one place moving your arms and legs with your head above the water than you are treading -more specifically treading water.

If you are moving in the water not using your arms or legs this is called gliding or stream line. You body is in a straight position, usually with you hands over your head in a rocket position and your face is in the water.

If you are lying in the water not moving your arms or legs and not moving this is basically floating.

It you are moving towards the bottom of the pool with your head under the water you are sinking, maybe even drowning.

But yes it is considered swimming, it is called the doggy paddle. So if you are getting from point A to point B (moving both your arms and legs) with your feet off the floor of the pool you are swimming. It might not be the most effective way of getting there, but you are moving.

As long as you are "afloat", it doesn't matter How you are swimming, you just are! That's why they train kids to swim the "doggie paddle"
