I agree with people answering my previous question that Charlton's problem is lack of organisation on the field. Their new manager is good technically: a motivator as captain would complement Les Reid and lift the other players. But Charlton need to do something big quickly now to avoid disaster.
David Beckham could do the job for Charlton that Alan Shearer did for Newcastle after he ceased to play for England, hopefully leading Charlton into Europe in a few years. He would not be competing for places in the same way as he would in an already big club, e.g. Spurs. Charlton is within easy distance of his England home.
I recollect Real Madrid recouped Beckham's transfer fee more or less immediately by commercial marketing. Charlton could probably do the same - the move would be a sensation. So the Directors ought to be able to raise the money (and manage the risk). This might be easier than to find a transfer fee for a mediocre player from existing budgets
