Depends what you want to do.
In the Winter, the upper Peninsula provides some great winter activities including skiing and snowmobiling.
In the summer, the West Coast of Michigan is where you want to be. All along the coast are great places. South Haven is a great little town with a light house jutting out into Lake Michigan.
Great places to eat, to golf, and the town has quite a few Bed and Breakfasts. There is also a great bike trail that goes through South Haven.
For the Summer: Just north of South Haven is Saugatuk. Saugutuk is a great little town full of unique shops and eateries. Saugatuk is very bohemian. There is a great harbor and you'll see a ton of yachts from people who come over across the lake from Chicago for the weekend in Saugatuk.
There are lots of farm side stands where you can get fresh produce during the summer, and go apple picking in the fall.
North of Saugatuk are more towns including Grand Haven. Grand Haven has a Coast Guard base and during the summer, there is a major festival celebrating the coast guard with a parade and Drum & Bugle Corps show.
There is a major brdge that goes across to and from the UP. There is also Macinac Island. It is a quaint island with no cars allowed. Only horse and buggy or bicycles. There are some great hotels there, although I have never been there. In the summer, there is the famous Chicago to Macinac (pronounced Mackinaw) yacht race. It is a very big deal.
Battle Creek Michigan is the cereal capital of the world where Kellogg's is located. You can get a tour of the facilities.
Of course Detroit is motor city where most of the US automakers are headquartered. I have not spent much time in Detroit area.
The west side of Michigan along the coast of Lake Michigan is where you want to be in Spring, Summer, and early Fall. In the Winter, you want to go to Upper Penninsula Michigan (Just above Wisconsin) where there is skiing and other great winter activities.
Hope this helps

That would depend on when you are vacationing and what you like to do on vacations...right now, the best place would be Traverse City...snowmobiling, cross country skiing, downhill skiiing, the Great Wolf Lodge (indoor waterpark) is having all their holiday activities (if you have children this is a must), winery tours on Leelanau Peninsula, holiday sales at all the stores, etc.
