What are other alternatives to a diamond ring?? I am looking to propose and I think diamonds are too cliche?

Before you decide that diamonds are too old fashioned or clichéd, have you thought of what would she want you to give? Is she the old fashioned type (deep down) who would like a classic proposal with a rock? Find that out first, or else what you think will fall flat. It's difficult enough to get you guys to propose, let alone get you to the Altar. I wanted my man to get on bent knee and propose like in the old movies. He popped the question in nearly that manner at an ultra-formal office party. So don't trample on the poor girl's expectations. Find out, and if she is in the same mold as you are, then take any suggestion from above. Or else get the classiest diamond and propose to her in style. I Promise neither of you will ever forget it. These are some of the caring things that make marriages stick.

Look at her other jewelry and see what she likes best.

Some stones are better for daily wear than others, though - emeralds are very soft, for example, and shouldn't be worn like an engagement ring is, every day for years. I have a friend with a very nice sapphire which she picked out with her now-husband.

As for the 'every girl loves diamonds' nonsense, it's not true. Diamonds are a horrible 'investment' (you can't ever resell them for anything near their appraised cost) and are from an artificial monopoly. Ethical and business-savvy women don't like diamonds except that they've been conditioned that way from the business. From a historical perspective, diamonds have only been considered appropriate since the mid-19th century; before that they were too difficult to cut for the mass-market.

The reason diamonds are cliche is because they are used by virtually everybody.

Another cliche thing people do is to use a Cracker Jack ring. I don't know if you want to go this route.

Just talk to her and find out what her favorite gemstone is. Use a ring with that in it.

My husband had a custom ring made for me in the shape of a mobius with 100 saphires. Just make sure that she doesn't want a diamond. You have to be willing to put up with a bunch of questions if your ring isn't a stereotypical diamond ring.

I think that her birthstone for the main stone on a ring with some little diamonds around it would be a nice change for an engagment ring. but every girl loves diamonds.

cliche or not...nothing will mean as much as a well picked out diamond ring. There are various cuts, clarities, and all nothing will replace a diamond sorry.

Ask her what she wants. I told my husband before he proposed that I wanted a black onyx. He bought me a diamond - I never wear it. I don't like diamonds.

Use your birthstones. You could have hers be the focal center of the ring with yours circling hers.

Another idea is using a ruby. There is a verse in the 31st chapter of Proverbs that says "There is a woman with a worth far above rubies." When you price them out, ther really good ones, you will find out what this really means. But it also could tell her how you feel about her.

either a real emerald or a presious stone that she really likes. I think that it would be helpful to go to a chain jewerly store and ask them what they would recommend. i know that I would love to have a nice emerald engagement ring. It shows that you love the individual but still want your relationship to be different than all the rest in the world
