MIA is a designation given by the Appraisal Institute. For an appraiser to have this designation they have to send in sample appraisals to the Institute and do some extra classes. They also are usually commercial appraisers, or certified residential appraisers. Which is a step above most appraisers who are only licensed.

I believe you mean MAI, Member Appraisal Institute. It is an industry accreditation body.

Sometimes jokingly referred to as "Made As Instructed". See, when the lender needs to make a loan in order to collect a commission, he needs the appraised value of the collateral to meet underwriting standards ... oh never mind.
