Because fear is a normal part of life. It usually comes from doing something new. Most people don't like changes b/c they are so customed to routine. But I agree with you, people shouldn't be scared. They should be giving everything all they got and succeed at everything in life! Success is beautiful.!!
Or their just too lazy to work at succeeding and don't care enough to do what it takes.

People are always afraid of changing, I think. It doesn't really matter whether the change is good or bad because it's different. Also, I think many people are afraid of trying to succeed because they are afraid that they won't. If we hold back, then that's our excuse for not succeeding. However, if we give it our all and don't succeed we think we're bad, unworthy, stupid, etc. There's a cool quote by Nelson Mandela that goes like this:
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that frightens us. We ask ourselves "Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?" Actually who are you not to be?... Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.... And as we let our own light shine we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

I personally had this fear (not anymore though)! I'll say that it could start at home, school, environmental factors, etc. Some have grown up always being told you can't do this or you can't do that, you're not smart enough, you're not pretty enough, etc. and it's because they themselves were told the same thing and its subconciously passed on from generation to generation.
I've overcome this fear by re-programming my mind. I've come to the realization that some people don't realize the power of their words and how they can build up or tear down a person. I forgave them even though they have wronged me and emptied out all of the negative things that were ignorantly spoken over my life! I plugged into a life-changing seminar and my thinking and life has NOT been the same since the first time I attended!

Becasue we are to small to ReALLY understand them. But without definate knoweldge people, humans, tend to become afraid. Fear comes out of ignorance, like the fear of death. Everyone is so afraid of it only becasue of two things: everyone dies alone and nobody knows where they are going. I suggest to love as many people as you can during your lifetime becasue you cannot take them with you.
Speaking of being afraid I have found it quite easy to be afraid of ones own potential, which is absured. But it does a good job of keeping you from failing or NOTsuceeding....
To be at piece with oneself is to be at peace with the world and with the world after this world. Look into your own microcosom because it holds all the answers. I think introspective people trying to find themselves are sometimes labled as narrsasistic, but I feel they are exactly the opposite. These people are the most hard working thoughrough thinkers that there are. Life is to understand oneself, if you stop learning about you self and stoptrying to be a better person then you have already died and are wasting your life before it has even had a chance to expire. Never give up on yourself.

If you suceed, suddenly the competition and people in general get meaner and fill up with envy and jealousy. You have to be more cautious when dealing with people because you never know if one day they will stab you in the back to cut you down to size. That's why people are afraid of succeeding.

There are many possible answers. Success brings about change and pressure. Once you succeed at something, the level of expectations for you go up. Some people cannot handle that. Keep the expectations low and you have little stress (at least, that is the theory). Unfortunately, these people usually bring many other stressors on them by their underachieving - namely poverty.
