Are you using Firefox? If so, get the UnPlug plug-in and go to Myspace. Just about every band on the planet has a myspace, and UnPlug will let you rip songs from the site.
I have no idea if it's "legal," but it is free.

As everyone has said above, Limewire or Bearshare. Just be careful, make sure your antivirus is up to date, can cause probs on your computer.....
