use a soft pencil liner in a shade such as slate, instead of dark black. Apply around you upper lid, but avoid lining the whole eye. Usually, that makes the eye appear smaller. smudge the liner with a sponge tip brush or a cotton swab. blend it with a dark shadow to create the smoky look

1. When doing a smokey eye, I like to start with the eye makeup first before applying foundation. It's easier to clean up any fallen shadow without messing up your entire makeup. This also avoids the dark raccoon look under the eye.

2. First start with a sheer nude color all over the eye. Go from lid to brow.

3. Next, apply a dark brown or plum eyeshadow from your lid to your crease. Since the look is smudged and smokey, I like to use creme shadows and apply them with either my fingers or a synthetic makeup brush.

4. Next, line the entire eye with a dark brown or plum eyeliner. For this look, pencil works the best. If you want a more glamorous eye, line the inner rim of your eye as well.

5. Follow with two-three coats of black mascara. I always recommend curling the lashes first to really open up the eye.

6. Make sure the brows are groomed and your ready to go!

To create a smoky effect.

Using a finger from your free hand, gently pull your lid away from the eye.

Then, using your choice of pencil with a tip that's not too sharp, apply a line to upper and lower inner rims, from corner to corner.

Next, with your fingertip, sponge tip applicator or eyeshadow brush, smudge and blend well.

**(Remember, apply eyeliner as close as possible to the lashes, to avoid the white line you get wen liner and lashes don't connect.)

apply eyeliner as normal, then use a grey/smoky coloured eyeshadow and using a cotton bud or make up brush about the same size, apply the eyeshadow, aroung the eyes, just outside of the eyeliner. this will look less harsh and more smouldering. for a more dramatic effect, firstly apply a base colour to the whole of the eyelid, try a beige, cream or light gold

Use a light black or dark grey eyeliner and smudge it using the tip of your ring finger ( this finger has the lightest touch ) or a pencil eraser works pretty good for me. Use very light feathery, short strokes when smudging it. Alot of eyeliners come with a smudger (for lack of a better word) built right on the stick. Just keep practicing, you will get the hang of it. If it helps, look at a picture while doing this so you get a better idea as how it should look. Good Luck and Merry Christmas.

the first thing i thought of when you said eye liner was the traditional liquid. generally that's just for straight forward lining. for the more smokey look, take the pencil type liner draw your line and then smudge it. use your ring finger (you don't tend to push as hard with). or use a quetip (sp). just apply a thinner line so it will smudge out. hope this helps :)

this is what works best for me, I use an eyeliner brush and use a black or dark brown(or any color for that matter) eyeshadow and just line from outercorner of the eye to about the middle and then take a q-tip and smudge it across the rest of the eye, you can do the same with a crayon eyeliner.

Firstly you need the pencil type not the pens.

apply moderately and smudge in - you can always apply more, but whacking on loads then trying to wipe down for your desired look only irritates the delicate skin around your eyes!!!

hold one side of the eye so your eyelid is streached not to rough though it might hurt, apply a thin line over the top of your eyelid dont make it too dark and a little under and add your eye shadow remember to go over the eye liner in a sideways stroke motion.
