Yes they are a concern, but not in the same way as a dog. They are not natural hosts for the worms, so not all cats who are exposed are infected. However since they are smaller, a few worms can do a great deal of damage. There is no treatment for feline heartworm currently, so most infected cats, are monitored closely, and given supportive medications. A lot of infected felines don't show symptoms making the initial diagnosis difficult. A good preventative routine is the best way to protect your cat.

yes, it's a big concern for cats as there is no treatment for cats who come down with heartworm disease. heartgard and revolution are avail for cats to prevent this. of course this is only something that you can get with a prescription or from your vet. heartgard is given orally and revolution is topical and also kills fleas, ticks and ear mites on your cat. so for a bit more the revolution is the way to go. it's been out on the market for a few years now and doing great for cats. many cat owners love the ease of using it and know that their pet is protected rather than taking the chance that the cat doesnt' eat the Heartgard or yaks it back up later. good luck and protect your kitty friends from unwanted hitchhikers.
