Male:
- Belly (plastron) is in-curved
- Tail is longer, thinner, and the cloacal opening is closer to the middle or tip.
Female:
- Plastron is flat or bulged out
- Tail is short and wide with the cloaca near the base.
Nail length works for some aquatic turtles, not for tortoises.
The males of most turtles are smaller and more colorful- but that does not help unless you have several to compare against.

I have red slider turtle and the male are darker then females. The males front claws are longer than the back claws. female claws are short on back feet and front feet. I don't know for sure if some rule applies to tortoises. I know for a fact that on all turtles and tortoises that males have longer and thicker tales. Females are shorter and thinner. Also the female reproductive organ (small hole in tale) is close to the body and the males is faller down the tall. Hope I help in some way.

In adults, the male's plastron (bottom shell) is slightly concave toward the back to aid in mounting the female during mating. A female will have a normal, slightly rounded plastron.

Males have longer front claws, and if u look at the underside of the shell, the V at the base of the tail on the male is wider than the females. I dunno if u'll understand what i'm describing tho
