Nobody is totally ugly. You should of found something else more attractive about her and ran with it. You could of told her beauty comes in all forms. Personality, kindness, humor, intelligence, nice legs, whatever. Focusing on a person's short comings does not do anyone any good for their self-esteem. Even if they keep saying how ugly they are. She has a problem with self-esteem. Don't feed into it. Men can be so visual!

My true friends are always honest with me and so am I.
So in case I had a friend saying that she's not pretty (and she wasn't indeed), I wouldn't like to her. I would tell her my honest opinion, I would point out what I think she should do to improve her looks and also I would explain to her that she has other qualities (like being intelligent, funny etc) that count a lot more than her looks.

wow, tough spot. At least you made feel good about her eyes. Women LOVE being told that they have beautiful eyes. I'm not so sure that I would have handled it any different.

Say something like, 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder'. Everybody's definition of beautiful is different. Lot's of people think you're pretty.

Dragon usually goes with "Of course you are!" and then mentally (unless her internal monologue is broken, and then she says it out loud) adds "...inside". Makes evarybody feel bettar.

I would try to point out good things about her and make her aware that you like her for who she is.

I would have told her what she wanted to hear. "Yes, You're very pretty". It's a harmless lie.
