It was written during the Romantic period by leading Russian Romantic composer. Hence, it is called a Romantic piece. What makes it sound to our ears romantic is the large sweeping melodies in stark contrast to the intense "battle scenes." It doesn't hurt that commercialism has taken the piece and used for every flower store, jewelery store and greeting card company out there.
