I'm from Poland but I've always lived in capitalism however I know many stories about socialism that my parents and other people told me and I'm also interested in politics so my answer is 'No, it's not time for socialism and never will'.

It's easy to put Capitalism and Socialism in boxes and slap labels on them. But the great thing about Democracy is that we can decide what the ingredients are. Our current "brand" of Capitalism has at least one major flaw: the only steps toward progress and gain are personal and selfish. It is infested with greed.

When people colaborate and pool resources for gains that are not selfish, great things are accomplished. Even during war, which I despise, the communal sense of progress and urgency can thrust a society forward at an alarming rate. Current models of capitalism simply don't facilitate this. And it's sad to think that such a terrible thing as war is one of the only things that motivates this attitude and behaviour.

Capitalism is not a bad thing. But when it is based upon selfishness, it does little to benefit society as a whole. It is really building a society using cheap, short-term materials. It has the potential to degrade very quickly. On the flip side, there are so many weaknesses in the Human race that fundamental Socialism offers a prime opportunity for greed and corruption that can remain unchecked for decades. These problems can be even greater: poverty, human-rights violations, etc.

I say, keep Capitalism. But let's do what we can to reduce those unhealthy ingredients and develop a "reduced greed" brand. This can be created using the miracle of Democracy. Think twice before you vote. Are you voting for someone who has YOUR best interests in mind? Or do they have the interest of society as a WHOLE in mind. They're usually quite different...

Its been tried and has failed every time. A good dose of reality for you commie is for you to move to N Korea for a while just to see how it works. Capitalism is the only form of democracy that works and has been so for thousands of years. Hell even a dictatorship works better than socialism. Are you from an underprivileged family that could not afford history books?

Sick as a dog...but a very well clothed, fed and accommodated one at that...(thanks Capitalism for those ones)

Think thing's are getting just a bit out of hand now though...
£1mil Christmas bonus's for our friends in the city...poor-rich gap widening faster than at any other time in the history of man... just a thought.

Surely Socialism could keep us well clothed, fed and accommodated as well though.

Comrade Cameron- I wouldn't put it past him!

Capitalism without restrains is bad for world's environment. Also, the rich should give substantial amount of their wealth and time to the 70% of the world's poplulation that lives on less than $1/day. (Like Bill Gates and other rich people have done recently).

Otherwise, I do believe Capitalism is the best economic system since it has built in checks and balances.

Love it or hate it, it's more than ably demonstrated that it is the only system that works. And, if socialism were to take its place, then where would the motivation to improve oneself be?

Look at Italy as an example. Socialism put it on its (cultural) knees for years after the Second World War.

Socialism has never worked. The idea of socialism is good, but human greed will always get in the way. Just look at the history of the Soviet Union.

For those that look to Europe for that answer:

https://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/us.html#Econ

Just the facts. Capitalism typically means higher GDP per ca pita and lower unemployment, higher household income. Sure there needs to regulations and laws preventing business from exploiting worker, but otherwise keep the government out of business. Please.

Capitalism without the government as referee can be a problem. The nations of Western Europe have found that a mixed ecomomy of capitalism with some socialistic policies have brought them a comfortable lifestyle.

I like a mix of both of them. Some other countries in Europe have that. Looking at some of the answers here it seems that some people don't even know what Socialism is. It is not communism like in North Korea.
