Go to your local computer store and buy a Patch cable. They will know what your talking about. Place the files you want to share into a folder. Right click on that folder and choose Sharing and security. Once up, choose share that folder and allow changes to be made. Then, go to your Network Connections Icon in your Control Panel and view Network Connections. On the left hand panel click My Network Places..and Wala!! Using just a regular cable and needing a router or medium of some sort takes to long to set up versus the Patch cable.

You need a crossover cable first off. You can't use straight through 'patch cable'. Next, make sure you have client for microsoft networks installed on both machines. You sometimes have to install NetBEUI if the machines aren't being seen by each other. I'm not 100% sure if it's necessary, but I think making sure both machines are in the same workgroup is also a requirement. There are other methods of transferring files (like via FTP) but this should be the easiest since you can drag and drop files if using windows.

easiest way is to use a crossover cable between each.
Setup file and print sharing for MS networks under network setting for each network card.
Setup laptops on same network... i.e. 10.1.1.1 and 10.1.1.2 w/ subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Set in same workgroup
Share a folder on one laptop.
Access that folder from laptop1 by \\laptop2\shared-folder in windows explorer...
That's it. Good luck!

You need a cross over cable or a router between them.
