Hey, I just got back from living in India for a year.. so have a little experience on what to bring :-) A lot of things are available in India's big cities (Kolkata, New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, etc) and keep in mind that you don't need a prescription for any type of medicine. Cipro is a great medicine to have as it cures any digestive/water related issue you may have. It's good to bring a reliable pair of sandals, mosquito spray with deet, if you are a girl or travelling with a girl- tampons, an a/c adapter for Indian plugs, mosquito netting for your sleeping bag, a sarong (works great as a towel/blanket/beach gear), a hat, and if you're a female make sure you have shirts that cover your shoulders.. you'll just get harassed even more. Hope this helps, and have a great time!

Take some iodine tablets or a small bottle of bleach to clean the water. Most people think bleach will kill you but in small amounts it can be used to clean drinking water. Also a good thing to take is match heads. Eat 1 match head a day will keep insects off of you because of the sulfur in them. Those are 2 tricks that army SARS school teaches you. Also take international phone cards or a sat phone for emergencies. Also a GPS system.

I have been there for a Month. In Mumbai where I was the whole time, you can find everything... so bring your luggage empty and get back with a lot of things. Clothes are cheap, the sell bottled water everywhere, Himalaya is so good is like Evian. Just be careful where you eat.....good luck.
