He'll let you know when he has had enough. The first week thier stomachs are the size of pea. They really can't hold very much. The first two weeks I had to supplement with breast feeding. My daughter ate almost 2 oz. every two hours or so. He'll let you know when he is hungry for sure.

Try pumping milk and feeding him from the bottle if you are concered otherwise wait it out. He should only be taking 1 oz at a time. Within a week he should be up to taking 2 oz. My son was breastfeeding for 30-60 minutes from 4 hours old to a month old. he went from 5lb 6 oz to 5lb 2oz in the first day then back to 5lb 40z @ day 2 and now at 5 motnhs he's 19+ lbs!
Do not let baby go more then 4 hours without eating...this could cause their blood sugar to DROP!!! Very important! Wake him up if you reach the 4 hours mark. Do NOT let baby sleep through the night!
If baby is getting enough he will sleep 1-4 hours (4 MAX). He will have a bowl movement after every feeding. and Min. 6 Wet diapers a day.

you may not be producing enough yet if he still seems hungry but don't give up. remember that as young as your baby is she needs really frquent feedings at first. As I'm sure you've heard breastfeeding is pretty much, supply dictated by demand. You may try pumping a little before you put her on the breast to help the let down. Your best bet is to contact La Leche league and express your concerns. Their experts will reassure you and let you know what is normal and how you can produce more milk for your babies needs.

Newborns can't hold much in their stomachs, so they only take a little bit at a time, and very frequently. What your son is taking sounds right for his age. Just keep feeding him when he's hungry, and he'll be fine. Just remember that if you're breastfeeding, babies do cluster feed to help build up your supply, so they'll eat very often, sometimes even 30 minutes!

my baby girl also ate about one ounce every 3-4 hours as a newborn. She weighed 5lbs, 11oz. The nurse at the hospital told me not to worry unless she "refused" two feedings (going 7-8 hours).
My pediatrician said to wake her to eat if she slept more than 6 hours without eating. Tips for waking baby are: changing the diaper, tapping the feet, blowing gently on her face, rubbing the spine.
Call the doctor if he hasn't had a wet diaper in 24 hours or a messy diaper in 72 hours.

Wow!
My daughter turned three on Dec 10th!
Yes babies that are that young don't take any more than that in the very beggining!
Your son will gradually take about a half ounce more when he is like a month old.
Congradulations on your son!

It sounds right. Not only to babies breastfeed for nourishment, but also for comfort. Just keep doing what your doing, relax and put your feet up, hon. Stress can play a huge part on how much you produce. Let your hubby/boyfriend do all the work! Just enjoy your time with your baby, and give it a week for your body and your baby's to get in sync with each other! Good luck and congrats!

Babies will eat what they need... I'm sure it's fine. Your son isn't that old yet, so he doesn't need much. That sounds perfectly ok to me. Good luck!!
