Staring at the sun (even with sun glasses) is dangerous.
I use a special Mylar filter designed especially for my telescope. With it, I have stared at the sun for tens of minutes.
Without it, I never stare more than 2 seconds.
You know when, on TV, they say "Don't try this at home"?
Well, don't try this at home.
If you really are intrested in looking at the Sun, get help from an expert and get a real filter (not some home-made stuff that may have problems).
Or look at the Sun through the Web.

Unless your eyes are protected with the best eye shields ever made, only an idiot or one who is planning on going blind will ever even attempt to stare at the sun for even a fraction of a second.

Me personally, probably about 5 seconds.
The first person to do it was Galileo Galilei. He used what would be the equivalent of our sunglasses on his telescope - enabling him to study the sun spots and the patterns of the sun as the Earth revolved around it. It was the beginning of his theory that the sun was the center of the universe, not the Earth, as the self-absorbed humans thought.

surprisingly this isn't as stupid of a question as one might think. once of the greatest scientfic minds in history actually asked it and tried it out.
Issac Newton, among some of his other great experiments, wanted to know how long you could stare at the sun before you went blind. wile conducting his experiment, Newton lost his sight for a couple of days until it finally returned.
another example of newton being himself was the time he stuck a cloths pin behind his eye. when asked why he did this, he replied, "to see what happened!"
yes, the above is absolutely true.
