Different "groups" and their workers etc.?

Food Service
Manual Labor
Health Care

You cannot pay the person who cleans and takes care of people (CNA), the same as a burger flipper or, a floor sweeper the same as a ditch digger. If they grouped them, and decided the minimum wage within their own groups, they should be "happier", yes?

"If we started paying people based upon the value of their work, garbage collectors and teachers would make far more than lawyers and CEO's. "

Wages should be privately decided on between employer and employee. If the employer offers too little, the employee can refuse to work. If the employee asks for too much, the employer can refuse to hire. Why does the government need to be involved by passing manditory laws setting a minimum wage? All that does is make sure that some fraction of people are completely unable to get a job since they don't add enough to employers' bottom lines to justify hiring them at that pay rate.

As in labor unions?

And what do you mean, you cannot pay a burger flipper the same as a ditch digger, or a maid the same as a direct-care staff? Are you saying that one service is more useful to society than another service? What are you basing that on? Where would we be without our janitors and burger flippers?

If we started paying people based upon the value of their work, garbage collectors and teachers would make far more than lawyers and CEO's.

It should be decided by the "free market" -- supply and demand for a particular labor or service. If there wasn't a minimum wage, the jobs that were out there would pay more because the meanial jobs would be mostly automated.

It shouldn't be illegal to offer or accept a job below a certain wage.

I don't disagree with you. Instead of government fixing the cost of labor, it should be decided by markets. When minimum wage goes up, so does inflation. Despite what liberal economists say, it is common sense, if you pay your employees more for labor, prices go up. Do people really think that the employer will eat the cost of paying more?
However, there needs to be protection of the worker. We can not allow greedy business men to take advantage of the poor and uneducated. Government oversight is sadly necessary in such a world of greedy people.

Because the minimum wage is not the minimum by group
That minimum would no doubt be higher than the absolute minimum which is being decided
Lets keep in mind that the minimum was originally instituted to be above the poverty line, then was revised to be the poverty line, now does not even come close to the poverty line
Question for you....Should US taxpayers let you pay a wage so low as to need public assistance for your employees?? Is it right to subsidize employers business operations by supporting their employees??

When a minimum wage increase is on the ballot, and passes, then there should be a increase for everyone who makes minimum wage, It should be up to no one who decides who gets it and who doesn't. It has already been decided by the voters. It's another prime example just how much the Republicans are totally against the wage increase.

This question misses the entire problem with minimum wage laws. The economics of minimum wage tells us that when we raise it, the following tends to occur:

1. The costs of goods and services will rise;

2. Businesses will hire fewer people and/or get rid of those they're currently employing, thus raising the unemployment rate.

Minimum wage itself has caused much more harm than good.

It can't be decided by employers because it is used as a political issue to deceive people into thinking politicians are trying to help them. Raising the minimum wage causes raised prices on goods to compensate. Nobody benefits except for the politicians that can use it as a campaign issue.

The truth is that a person who earns minimum wage is really worth less than that. These people making minimum wage should focus their efforts on learning a skill so they won't have to earn minimum wage instead of campaigning to raise minimum wage.
