Look for a domestic brand (Ford, Chrysler, GM) since most people don't think they are worth much you'll get more car for your money versus an import.

I'm not sure how much you're wanting to pay, but here are some suggestions. About the only decent 5 door vehicles are going to be SUVs. A 4Runner is a decent SUV for the money and is reliable. It has 5 doors, easy on gas (depending on how you drive it obviously). You can find 1996 to present starting around $7,000 to $8,000. A Nissan Pathfinder is also a decent buy. I've seen 1999 models going for around $8,000. You tend to find that Japanese and European car makers have the more reputable names as far as reliability and quality of vehicles. I'm not bashing American made vehicles by any means, stats just show that Lexus (made by Toyota), Porsche, and Hyundai are the most reliable vehicles as of now. Especially during the 90's, Japanese vehicles were the most reliable.

5 doors? Try a used Subaru wagon. You can find one with an engine over 2 liters, they are tough and safe and give decent performance.
