The sandwich, which is most popular with world-wide eaters, functions as a noun or a verb and usually prefers to have its name pronounced as SAND wich. Besides the more obvious occupation of being something edible between two or more slices of bread, metaphorically speaking, it also likes to squeeze in between two other people, places, things, materials, etc.; as, he is willing to sandwich an appointment in between two other meetings or her car was sandwiched between two other cars in the parking lot.

The most popular perspective regarding the origin of the word sandwich, which we use today, is that it was born in London during the very late hours one night in 1762 when an English nobleman, John Montagu, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich (1718-1792), was too busy gambling to stop for a meal even though he was hungry for some food. The legend goes that he ordered a waiter to bring him roast-beef between two slices of bread. The Earl was able to continue his gambling while eating his snack; and from that incident, we have inherited that quick-food product that we now know as the sandwich. He apparently had the meat put on slices of bread so he wouldn’t get his fingers greasy while he was playing cards. It’s strange that the name of this sex fiend should have gone down in history connected to such an innocent article of diet.

The legend is that the Earl of Sandwich in England was a compulsive gambler. So much so that he didn't want to leave the table to eat. According to the legend, he ask his servant for a piece of meat between two slices of bread. Other people liked the idea and soon would ask, "I will have what Sandwich had", and eventually, "I will have a sandwich".

Note, very few people believe he was the FIRST person to do this. He is just the one who gave it a name.

John Montagu - The Earl of Sandwich

British first lord of the Admiralty (1748–51, 1771–82). He served as secretary of state for the north (1763–65, 1770–71) and led the prosecution of John Wilkes. Appointed first lord of the Admiralty during the American Revolution, he was criticized for keeping much of the British fleet in European waters to avoid French attack. His promotion of exploration led Capt. James Cook to name the Sandwich Islands (later Hawaii) after him in 1778. The sandwich was named after him in 1762 when he spent 24 hours at a gaming table without other food.

The legend is that a British Lord, Lord Sandwich, was playing at a roulette table and wanted to eat something without having to leave the playing table. So he ordered his valet to prepare some meat and pack it between two slabs of bread, for him to eat.
Thus the sandwich was born and there is probably nobody in the world who has not eaten one at one time or another.

It was named after the Earl of Sandwich. This guy was said to be a big-time gambler - he loved playing cards with his buddies all the time. During one big game, he didn't want to stop play for a meal, so he told his kitchen help to take some of yesterday's roast and stick it between two slices of bread, and bring that out. His buddies liked it too, and they named it after him.

The sandwich was named after 4th Earl of Sandwich, an 18th-century English aristocrat, although it is unlikely to have been invented by him.
