Apparently many Post Offices are going to close in the next few years. What is your opinion on this issue?

Both the labour party and the conservatives both used the post office as a political football, where both promised to keep the post office open. They said this just to get votes. As far as i'm concered any business that goes private can stand on its own two feet or can fall. I feel for the pensioners and customers but there has been a rush to privaitise everything in this country with disasterous effects. Everyone is chasing the mighty £ and $.

With the liberalisation of postal services required by EU legislation, government payments to rural post offices, where it does not reflect the level of business there is counted as state aid, and therefore illegal.

If you want to reverse the closures, you can't do it and belong to the EU.

Of course, the government doesn't want to admit this, and neither does the Blue Labour opposition, but that's how it is.

Interestingly, the ending of Royal Mail's monopoly on postal deliveries, the restructuring of postal rates dependent upon size and the delayed privatisation of Royal Mail all spring from the EU as well.

Personally, I can't help but think that some things are better off belonging to the state. Railways, postal services, water all spring to mind for a start. But as the EU is fundamentally corporatist, I guess that ain't gonna happen

The government has taken away a lot of the services that the post office used to offer. It will be very sad for many local areas and villages if they shut them down (and they will) as sometimes it is the only time elderly people can access their money or see anyone to chat to and many of them will not even be able to get a stamp.

Well more and more the post offices services seems to be descreasing by me. They have stopped doing the television licence there, stop other things and refused to accept my visa electron because I was under 16 to pay for a simple parcel and the woman made that her own policy.

I don't know what to think really but for all those people who go to the post office to get their money it is going to become such a hassle for them even if some of them have bus passes.

I think it's a bad idea. People need their local post office and it helps create a feeling of community in certain areas too. A lot of people don't know how use the internet or can't afford it, so local post offices are needed still.

I think its really bad, near me 3 local post offices have recently closed and now everyone has to go into the main town.
Which is only 5 miles away but far enough for the elderly.

Again the only people who are going to suffer are those who seem to not matter to this government. How are old people or people with disabilities going to cope? Unless they live in the town centre. This is why the government started paying benefits and pensions directly into bank accounts. It's been on the cards for a long time.

Why is it that we could afford to run hospitals and post offices and police stations for decades and now, all of a sudden, we can't afford them any more? Can't or won't?

Disgraceful... many communities need their local post offices for essential services.
