Gretzky
Howe
Orr
Roy (yes, a goalie)
Lemieux
Roy may be questionable, but he did win a Stanley Cup with Montreal, almost single-handedly in 1993.
That being said, I think Bobby Orr is the big one that everyone forgets. His career was cut much too short...and he can never be seen as Howe or Gretzky as he was defense. However, if I could start a team and got to draft any one player, past or present, Orr would be first.

1) Gretzky- doesn't matter what anyone says he has more assists than any other player does points.
2) Howe- physical, dominant player
3) Lemieux- the only player who had a shot at Gretzky's un-breakable records.
4) Bobby Orr- Best offensive defenseman ever
5) Terry Shawchuk- Because I think a goalie should be included. Although after Brodeur's becomes the winning-est goalie ever, he could considered the best.
Unfortunately, there isn't enough room on this list for so many of the greats. I know Nicklas Lidstrom isn't even near the top 5, but I'd like to see him on some of the lists for top defenseman ever. He may not score 46 goals a season, but he is such a solid defender than can lead the team so well with his breakout passes.

You've made an impressive list. There are dozens of worthy choices, Richard, Belliveau, Hull, (Bobby or Brett), Dionne, Gilbert Perrault, Bossy, ORR. Earlier generations have their picks as well. I would replace Stevie Y with Orr, but cannot argue the rest.
As for a goalie, Sawchuck was amazing, Roy, not bad, Brodeur and Dryden better. Parent for a couple years was unbeatable. Can argue for Plante, Vezina, Esposito? Glenn Hall, Johnny Bower, Turk Broda.....

gotta go top 10 on this one.
1 howe
2 lemieux
3 gretzky
4 jacques plante
5 yzerman
6 orr
7 dryden
8 sawchuk
9 doug harvey
10 mikita
gretzky was great, but i have never seen anyone make defenders look as ridiculous as mario lemieux did in his prime. it helped that he was like 6'5" and 225, too. and gordie howe was the most complete player ever. gretzky never could have held his own in a fight, and i don't think i'd put him on the ice in a shootout.

Well if you aren't going in a special order then ok. If you are really trying to put Mario at number 4 I think you are crazy. Also where is Orr. Is this a "offensive" player only list?

if you look at lemieux's all time stats you'll notice he was far from gretzky' appg (average points per game) lemieux has 1723 points in 915games that is crazy where as gretzky had 2857 in 1487 games. but the top guys are sakic lemieuz gretzky howe the rocket (maurice richard) guy lafleur and eric lindros used to be there but he has to many concussions now.
