Khaki is one of those colours, like denim blue, that can function like a netural, even though technically it's not.
That said, the olive end of khaki goes really nicely with a range of red tones, from pale pink to dark burgundy. It also sets off whites, yellows and oranges nicely. Purples are good, too - especially a nice lavendar. And black, of course.
However, it can be difficult to mix with other greens or blues. I have an olive drab khaki jacket that I love, but I never wear it with my favourite green shirt. It just doesn't look right.
As for patterns both army and safari motifs work, but are cliche. I'd avoid them. Go for solids, stripes or some nice feminine florals. Go for larger florals - small all over patterns are out-dated (and not in a good "retro" way). Especially if your base pieces are plain, an accent with some pattern or texture will give the outfit interest. A nice logo or slogan T-shirt paired with an olive jacket or skirt, will give you an edgier look.
Have fun!

I think deep reds work well, but try pink for a lighter fresh look. I would do an olive green top with greyish glen plaid trousers with your boots as well. Try pale yellow, pale blue, or a stark white to make an interesting statement. Lastly, my favorite pair of city-shorts are a light olive green and I religiously wear a bright orange sweater set with them. I always get compliments.

Olive green suits very well with dark purple, mauve etc. for sophisticated look. Brown, green yellow suit well but it is common.
