Your brain lets you see, hear, smell, taste, move, think, feel, and care. It allows you to walk and talk, learn and remember. Your brain processes your thoughts, moods, and emotions. It makes you conscious and keeps you alive. Everything you do and everything you are comes from your brain. And everything your brain does comes from electrical signals and chemical connections. At its core your brain is a Lightning Storm
The building blocks of the brain are special cells called neurons. Your brain has about 100 billion neurons, and there are at least 100 billion more in your body's nervous system. Neurons are long, spidery cells with arms like tentacles. They fire electrical signals along their wiry arms, back and forth, all day, every day, throughout your entire life.
Neurons come in many styles. There are at least 50 different shapes of neurons in your brain--some big, some tiny, some long and skinny, some fat and round, some with thick branches like trees. No matter what they look like, their purpose is the same: to send and receive electrochemical messages.
Neurons don't touch one another. To "talk" back and forth, neurons dispatch special delivery messengers across tiny, fluid filled gaps called synapses. These messengers, small molecules called neurotransmitters, wait near the gaps until a neuron's electrical signals arrive. Then they jump the gap and dock on the other side, carrying their message to neighboring neurons.
