Building your own PC is fine if you are techy ...and if you were I have a feeling you wouldn't be asking this question.
But that's okay ...we all have different skills & talents. Now, back to your question :
I've been an IT professional for over twenty years & own many PCs. One of them is an HP Pavillion Media Center with a dual core AMD64 5000+.
It is absolutely phenominal in quality, reliability, & customer service. This unit has everything you need (hardware & software). You will also get a free upgrade to Vista as soon as it is available.
Check them out at your local Circuit City or Best Buy. I suggest you purchase from a retailer that offers a no hasstle 30 day return policy. This way you can try it out for a month at no risk.

First off you can build a desktop a very high end one that will last for at least 5 years for 1000. Otherwise if you just want to buy go hp do not go dell. Dell is being sued by so many states you might just get left hanging. Make sure you get a large hard drive at least 250 gig or so and make sure you get a stand alone video card with it. You want a min. of 2 gigs ram and a dvd writer dual layer. You want at least a dual core and i prefer amd to intel. If at all possiable wait till late next week to get on as amd quad cores are coming out sept 5th and from what everyone says they are going to smoke intel badly it is a true quad core and not just 2 x dual core chips.

If those are the main uses for your computer it should be easy to find something for a lot less than $1000.00 Your needs are basic and even basic machines today can handle much more than you say you require. You do not require a really expensive machine. Just about any manufacturer has something that will fill your requirements. Just look for the best deals. Dell, Tigerdirect, Gateway, plus many others are online places to visit. Yo may even do better at a local electronics store in your neighbourhood. AMD is good no question but for your requirements an Intel is just as good.

For what u want Internet, music, offices, and aim you can get a basic model PC that cost less then $1000 like $500 or less. if you look around at staple, best buy and others places like them u can get a good deal, or even get a dell their basic model is $360. and spend the money you saved on a nice LCD, and speaker system for the PC.

dell computers are the best on the market. don't get a gateway one they aren't good at all. the company dell builds them the way you want it. don't buy any gateway computer, the (E machine is built by them).don't buy a barebone computer because that is not what you want. we had a gateway and it wasn't what we had ordered, they sold us what they wanted us to buy and we got screwed by them.
