Freemasons are a fraternity "men only" There is also a female version called the Eastern Star. They have three appendent bodies the York Rite, Scottish Rite, and Shriners. Masons raise money for charity providing millions of dollars a day to various charities and it costs about 8 million a day to run a Shriners hospital where a child is treated at no charge. A society of secrets rather than a secret society all our rituals are plastered all over the Internet. But our grips, keys, and tokens are kept as secret as possible in the information age. No I'm NOT a devil worshiper just the opposite

A Freemason is a man who believes in God and has been selected to join the oldest fraternal organization in the world. The fraternity attracts the best men of society and by giving them responsibility in the Lodge and in the community endeavors to make them better men and as a result the community around them is enhanced.

There is no demon worship, sacrifices, and neither is it a secret organization. Our Lodge buildings are well marked and you can find us in the Yellow Pages and on the Internet. We have modes of recognition so that one member may prove to another that he is a member but then so do the military, the congress and the policeman's horse.

If you want to be a Freemason, you must ask to join. No one will ever ask you to be a Freemason as each member comes of his own free will.

Freemasonry:

the teachings and practices of the secret fraternal order of Free and Accepted Masons, the largest worldwide secret society. Spread by the advance of the British Empire, Freemasonry remains most popular in the British Isles and in other countries originally within the empire.

Freemasonry evolved from the guilds of stonemasons and cathedral builders of the Middle Ages. With the decline of cathedral building, some lodges of operative (working) masons began to accept honorary members to bolster their declining membership. From a few of these lodges developed modern symbolic or speculative Freemasonry, which particularly in the 17th and 18th centuries, adopted the rites and trappings of ancient religious orders and of chivalric brotherhoods. In 1717 the first Grand Lodge, an association of lodges, was founded in England.

Basically a mason is one who is skilled at making things or building things with stone. Whereas, a freemason is a man who is a member of a large secret society. Now, what have you in mind when you ask what kind of 'secrets' do they hide?

Eric, you will get many strange answers to this. Of course there are the "masons build things out of stone," smart-aleck answers. Then there are the "masons are demon worshippers. Most of them don't know it, but when you get to the top ranks, it is all explained." Of course there are the cut-and-paste from Wikipedia folks. I will try to add my insights, such as they are, without resorting to any of that.

I am a member of an esoteric branch of Freemasonry, American Co-Masonry. We admit women and men to all parts of it. No, we do not have an Eastern Star since women are equally in Lodge with us. I say "esoteric" because we truly do work ritual in the spirit of the ancient mystery schools.

What we are about is the grandest secret of all. I can communicate here openly because I doubt that any harm can come of it. No, it is not about hand-shakes, signs, or anything covered within my Obligation. Ready? We do alchemy. We change the lead in our hearts into gold.

The goal of Freemasonry is to awaken within the core of each human being the values of Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth. Once those are awakened, the heart of the Masonic Brother and that of the world is changed.

When someone asked Jesus "who is my brother?" what did he say? He related the story of the Good Samaritan. Jews hated Samaritans; yet, here was a guy from the other side who helped a Jew in trouble. Freemasons try to see everyone in the world worthy of Brotherly Love.

Relief means that you give because you have Abundance in your life. Freemasons have always helped with charitable enterprises. The Shriners are all masculine rite Freemasons and they are reknown for their helping children. In American Co-Masonry we help in smaller ways but we always help. Women's shelters, food banks, homeless shelters, animal rescue all have benefitted this year from Lodges I belong to.

Truth. What a concept! We do our best to tell the truth not just to each other but to the world. Not levelling with someone leads to all sorts of misunderstanding and chaos.

We are not a religion but a set of morals. We take for our symbols that of stone masons because human nature is as hard to mold as stone. Ever try to give up a habit? Then you know. And no, we do not worship a devil. Fact is, we have Christians, Buddhists, Moslems, Latter Day Saints (Mormon), Taoists, Wiccans, and Deists in our Lodges. One thing, you have to believe in a Supreme Being, something larger than yourself.

If I can be of further aid, please feel free to contact me. Also you may wish to look at the website linked below.

Best wishes,

I really think it has to do with the ability to understand complexity and balance , design and will to build, there is no secret only that many do not know them personally or their particular skill same as What is a Gardener or a singer, what is any artistic expression.which captivates us and compels us to keep repeating the desire to touch, hold and even to do. what then is the force which guides the feet to walk a certain path or a pen to write down words from the heart and mind or what the eye has seen or ear heard, what then is the purpose for design to the seeing mind but to give of itself to meet a need.in mankind.
