I have noticed that schools are raising the expectations of kids now to be more competitive globally. The real difference I see is that school funding continually gets cut so the teacher/student ratio is out of hand. Kids don't have the attention they need & I don't feel schools are teaching students the life skills (balancing check books, morals, career solutions, etc) that they need in todays world.
To answer... I think people are smarter book wise, but not life wise.

I am 47.
Yes, I have noted that not only do schools "dumb-down" (books, expectations) but also the press, TV and such have started using "dumbed-down" communication. Besides this, I have noted that teens and young adults no longer have the "maturity" they had decades ago, as well as when compared to other cultures/countries. They act childish....well into their 30s!
You can compare an SAT test from the 60s to one now and see the effects. "No child left behind" is also not a good beneficial ....

Sorry, I'm not 35 or older, but I have to answer. You can't make generalizations like that. Some older people are dumber than kids today, and some kids today are dumber than older people.

I am 38. I have met quite a few people that were a few french fries short of a happy meal. Young people these days seem like the have no common sense. Not all of them, just some. My daughter is 17 and she is so smart, she has no common sense at all. She asks me at least one dumb question a day. Still love her though.

I have noticed a big change in the intelligence of people. I just don't know what happened. People used to take pride in being smart, now it seems that people want everyone to think they are stupid, I just don't get it at all.
