By this I mean, the house is always full with friends and their friends. We have parties. A lot of times there are strangers that are using my wireless connection. Mostly, they are friends, and I don't mind them being able to remote, but God knows what they are doing on the internet. Especially if it's different people and different laptops.

Thank you for your responses. It seems like a risk to have others use my router. If my network is busted will they at least be able to find the guilty computers? I would want absolute innocents.

First of all, most things go unnoticed on the Internet. Don't think your house will immediatly get raided if you get an unexpected pop-up with child porn on it, or something. Your ISP has better stuff to do then to filter through every image their clients are downloading. You have to do really illegal stuff on a large scale before you get noticed. So if you're worrying about some drunk guys at your house doing something stupid once, you don't have to worry.
Secondly, you are not the one responsible just because you pay for the internet connection. They have to prove you are the one that commited the crime. Just linking your connection to you is not enough if several people use that connection.

But most of all, I wouldn't worry as much. Most people have the common sense and decency not to do stupid stuff on other people's connections. And even if they don't, you are not going to take the fall for it.

Yes, if they are using your connection with your permission, then your house will get raided if someone is downloading child porn with your connection. In that situation, in all honesty if you're paying for the internet connection or it's under your name, then I'd ditch the wireless router and go copper for your own sake. Just tell your friends it broke so they don't ***** at you for locking them out.

However, they cannot get you personally in trouble unless they find evidence on a computer that you own. So the worst that could happen is they raid your house, confiscate all the computers on the network, and find out that your computer is clean.

Anything they do will look like it is coming from your network (which it is). If they are doing illegal things, the authorities will come to you since it was being done through your Internet connection.

Uh, yeah. Or even by e-mails that people send from your internet connection. Your IP address is an identifying marker by which others can find you. Use discretion concerning who uses your bandwidth.

If they download anything illegal, like music, then the owner of that router is liable.
