I recently aquired many more friends, and now I need to buy them gifts. They won't tell me what they want, but they are still expecting some sort of gift. My fallback is some caramel that I have cooked up, but I don't thik that that would be a good gift for everyone.

Gift cards to stores like Wal Mart. Or you could get American Express gift cards. These can be used anywhere!

Gift cards work well! My father-in-law did that one year for everyone. It was quick, easy and he had a set amount of what to give EVERYONE! He chose a visa gift card, it was cool, everyone was happy. And he didn't have to deal with the hectic malls or stores for the rest of the year. Plus we got to spend more time with each other as a family because that's what Christmas is really about, or at least that's how it should be.

Movie passes are popular! Especially for movie fans or for people with small kids. Gas cards are good too, especially if you know of someone that does a lot of driving. There's also good old holiday cash, no one could possibly not be happy with that.

If you maybe know of a newlywed couple just starting out, you could make a recipe book for them to share and enjoy doing together. Add some of your recipes, and of friends that have some and toss in a few from the net and maybe a few from a cookbook or two that you have. Decorate the box or whatever you put them in and they'll be happy to have something to start off with. (speaking of personal experience as a newlywed couple).

Hope this helps, happy holidays.

Depends on where you live, how close you are with the people, things like that.

I personally like cash, but other people consider that tacky because it "shows little thought".

You can't really go wrong with a gift card to a mall, or a gift card to a wide variety of stores. I wouldn't suggest a gift card to a store like Staples, because that kind of limits them, and let's face it - you don't want paper or CD's as a Christmas gift. Go to your local mall and buy maybe a $20 gift card for acquaintances, $30 for co-workers, $40 for close friends? All depends on how good friends you are, what your relationship is like, and the environment that you live in. Also pay attention to your budget, and personally, I don't think there is a need to get gifts for everyone. Get gifts for your family occassion - and use the caramel for co-workers, things like that.

If you live in the boonies - a tractor might be nice... A hoe is good anywhere you go?

It is not about getting them what they want. It's about thinking of them. Bake some cookies for them and a card. You also said they are recently aquired friends, if you just met them I wouldn't get them more than a box of chocolates and a card. Invite them all over to your house and have snacks and drinks or a nice dinner.

Any homemade treats like your caramel is a wonderful gift. If you're not satisfied with that though do other treat baskets of cookies or chocolates.

You could do gift cards or when I don't know what to get people I always end up getting them fleece pajamas (pants for guys & sets for the gals). They're affordable, and it's very easy to guess the sizes.

I wondered the same thing. I had one thought: Inexpensive, easy to find, small package:
Computer users: USB Flash Drive
Non computer users: MP3 Player

Whadaya think?
