To know whether it IS for real..or if I am being scammed by a third party?

If someone has contacted you by telephone, then they should be willing to send you a photocopy of the judgment. Look carefully at it. It will have a caption at the top which identifies the court in which it purports to be filed. It will also have a case number on it. Look also to determine if there is the signature (or stamp) of a judge and if the judgment has a file-stamp (showing its actually been filed with the court.

THEN... you can also call the clerk of the court where the judgment is. Give them the case number and ask if there is indeed a judgment in that case.

Generally, a judgment may not be obtained without you being served with a notice that the lawsuit has been started. However, obtaining service is a complicated matter.

Either call or go to the courthouse for the county you reside in and check.
