Open the "File" menu. I've noticed that nowadays when Media Player is running, if it's set to "work offline" then all my other online stuff (messenger, etc) no longer gets to the 'net. Uncheck it and it should all be happy.

This started around Media Player 9 or 10, and they haven't fixed it yet.
