I've wondered about this myself. Tupac and I are about the same age, and I became interested in his life - something I knew only a little about, though I'd heard of him - when one of my Composition students wrote a paper about him.
We have different tastes (in almost everything, it's likely), but I've become convinced of Tupac Shakur's (born Lesane Parish Crooks in 1971) genius. He was a brilliant man from the beginning, writing songs at 12, rapping at 15. Powerfully fluent. Yes, he fell in with a bad crowd, but I'd suggest society must bear some of the blame for this. There are a lot of totally unfair things in contemporary society, things that can hold a man back. Tupac set out to beat them all.
Whomever judges a man harshly for trying to get ahead in life using his brains and his talents is probably just jealous. Question his choices, dislike his music -- it's a free country -- but never question his right to ambition.
I mean no disrespect when I say that Tupac's gifts and ambition made him something of a master manipulator. He was out to get ahead. He was interested in Renaissance-era master manipulator Niccolo Machiavelli (1469-1527, author of The Prince). Tupac used "Makaveli" as a logo for this reason.
Proponents of the "Tupac is still alive" conspiracy theory point to his manipulations, suggesting that his death was just one more.
The evidence, however, isn't very compelling. Like the people who believe Elvis' death was faked, I want to believe Tupac is alive. The more I learn about him, however, the more I'm aware of the driving force of his ambition, and the demands of his talent.
Can we find some other guy who sort of looks like him, or edit a photo or a video to make it look like he's still around? Sure we can.
When it comes right down to it, his ambition - one of his greatest traits - is what convinces me he is dead. If he was really alive, I believe he would have trouble staying out of the spotlight for so long. His ambition would drive him out of hiding again. He would not be able to hold back his talent from the world. He would gather people around him. He would be an influential presence, and it would be tough to keep it all secret. No impersonator or fake photograph can do all these things.
As a teacher, I am honored whenever I'm priviledged to work with a talented student. I commit to doing what I can, to not giving up easily, in part with Tupac in mind. Genius comes in many forms.
