Always having this dilemma over Xmas when I go away to see my family, and usually have my neighbour to feed her. This yr, i've not been able to use him, and relied on others to help out for when i've been away a lot at w/ends (2nts... tho' have had probs with her 'pooing' in a room, deliberatly in the same spot, rather thn her litter tray, but not done that for a couple of w/ends recently). this time, w/out resorting to one other good friend (with family tho') , i'm thinking of just leaving her with a new electronically timed-dinner bowl so that she could be fed on her own.. what do you think.. judging from her past experiences, she doesn't seem to like being kept in on her own w/o any human contact.. i have thought at the very last, last resort of taking her to my parents' with me, tho' they have a very big aggressive dog that is uncontrollable sometimes.. but i can't imagine her being safe in a room that is next door in the kitchen where the dog sleeps at night.cant afford cattery

i go away at the w/ends coz of work (part-time) and i have debt probs, but always have daughter around to pop in for a few hours each day, so it's not like she's entirely on her own for 3 whole days.. this time, i was proposing to take her to the cattery but their prices are double over the Xmas break.. the family i see will only get together the during the break, so it's not like i get to see everyone as we all live miles apart from one another.. judging from a couple of harsh responses, i mihgt just take her with me on the train (i don't drive, so imagine the stress of travelling on the Eve with loads of other travellers and their bags!! i would prefer to be away for the night but i can't do that as i have to rely on the trains, and they're not resuming services till the 27th!!

She will be all right. As the other people say, just leave plenty of food and water, and if you can more litter boxes, if not, newspapers where she normaly goes when you are not home. Also you may want to put some music to her, so she won't feel that lonely. Don't worry, and I think she will be better in her own home than with a dog teasing her.

it is illegal to leave any animal for more than 24 hours. It is also dangerous. What if she is hurt in some way and lays in your house injured for 4 days? What if she knocks over the water bowl and has to go 4 days without water? YOU decided to get the cat, YOU have a moral duty to care for her properly. If you cannot, you need to find it another home.
You will just have to spend less on xmas pressies and booze and use the money to pay for a cattery.
My son would be very angry if I was in your situation ansd spent money on buying him a pressie instead of caring for my pet properly. I think he would disown me.

4 days is too long without someone keeping an eye on her.Its not just a food thing, what if she hurt herself or was ill? You would never forgive yourself if something happened whist you were gone. Also pets can get stressed & bored without company when they are used to someone being around.Have you not got a neighbour who could pop in each day? Just think you are better to be safe than sorry.

I think you are looking at her best interest by not taking her with you. Your parents have an unpredictable dog that could do a lot more harm to your cat than it would if you leave her at home.
Cats are independant creatures.. If you had a dog, then I would say take it...b/c dogs have to be walked and can't take care of themselves like cats can.
I had a big orange tabby that HATED being left alone. I would have to go away for about 5 days to training for work and could not take him on the plane (since the company was paying for the flight). I left him plenty of water and food. When I came home he was happy as ever and not mad at all at me.
If you dont want to put him in a kennel somewhere for a few days, then I dont see why you couldnt just leave her at home. As long as she has plenty of food and water for the 4 days.

go to the store and get a bunch of those throw away roasting pans. about the same size as the litter box. line them up with her original box and put litter in each. fill your biggest 3 mixing bowls with dry food, and your biggest 3 cooking pots with water. leave a tv on in 1 room (preferably her fav room), and a radio or tv in another. don't take her out of her home. especially to a home with a dog that is often out of control. if you can get someone to come by once a day to check on her, great. otherwise, i wouldn't worry too much. cats are very independant and intelligent. she may not speak to you for a few days after, but she'll be fine.

The "pooing" outside the litterbox only on weekends sounds like she is doing it out of spite or anger, because you are not home. My roommate's cat will do that if she is gone for a couple days (even though I am home and feeding her).
I have left my cat home for 5 days no problem, but I always paid someone to come over and check on him a couple times.
You don't want to come home at the end of your trip and find that your cat tipped over his water bowl and died of thirst, or that the dinner bowl got jammed and he couldn't eat.
If you don't know anyone to check on him, try boarding him at a vet or at a humane society- they may let your board for a cheaper charge than the vet, which I know around here is very expensive.

No, I really don't think 4 days alone is a viable option. I know they're self sufficient and all that but no Your local cattery or RSPCA branch might know of a foster home (yes they have them for cats) if you plead that you really HAVE to go for 4 days, otherwise you'll just have to not go for so long or come back half way through. Sorry buddy but its your cat and you must take responsibility for it, not this half hearted ownership deal. Sounds like you can afford to go away regularly, surely you can afford £20 quid or so for 4 nights in a cattery! "Search your heart"! x

Why not look on gumtree.com and hire for 10£ a visit, someone to come to your house and check on your cat, hang around for 15 min, feed and water, as well as get your mail. There are many services out there and will give you piece of mind and your cat gets a scratch as well.

I'm sorry but if you cannot afford a cattery, you can't afford to own a cat. Pet ownership is a responsibility and a big cost. Beg steal or borrow to take her to a cattery, else don't leave her for four days over Christmas. Your choice....
