You must have had the most special hamster in the world and you must really miss him alot. Replacing him will only be a tribute to how special he was. It means he was so great you cannot stand to live without another pet. Your new pet may never live up to the old one but let it try!!

No, you are not replacing the one you lost. You just love hamsters and are a wonderful caring person to give a lonely animal in a boring cage a happy life . It would be a shame to let that waste and not rescue another life . No way should there be guilt attached . I am sure in years to come when you think back about your life you will remember each and every one of them with great fondness. I know because I loved all my pets and still cry about some of them that were extra special .

You never really love hamsters the way you can love a cat or a dog - or a person. So I think you are fairly normal.
If it were a cat or a dog I'd suggest you wait a few months at the risk of seeming to be heartless. If it was your old Mum you were trying to replace after only 2 days I'd say you were in a state of shock and unable to function properly.
Get yourself another hamster, but remember how new ones bite - and give it a different name out of respect for the old one.

We are all hurt and upset when our pets die and you shouldn't feel guilty for wanting another one. Do not view it as replacing your pet because you simply can't replace a pet, they are all different and they all have their own unique personality. Instead, view it as giving another pet a good home like you gave your hamster. There are so many pets out there that get ill-treated, you can offer one of them a good loving home. It isn't replacing the pet, it is giving another pet a home and giving you somewhere to direct the love you have.

Vicky,
There is nothing wrong with wanting to get a new pet. It may seem to soon but if you feel like there is something missing, then your best bet would be to buy a new pet. There are many people that do it. They are not trying to replace the beloved pet but only trying to fill the void that they have.

I recently had to put down my 15 year old golden retriever. I had gotten him for x-mas when I was in kinder garden. He was apart of the family. And my best friend my whole life. When he died it felt just like a person died, and I still cry about it a month later. I got a new puppie, and it really helped me cope with the loss of my other dog. No other dog can replace him, but the companionship is niv, and well needed.

You could never replace the pet. It's only too soon if you feel like your not ready for one. If you want another one, go for it. You're not replacing you "hammy," your becoming a new and better mother to another one!
Hope I helped some!

Sorry for your loss. My dog died not so long ago and I felt the same way but I realized I wasn't replacing her (nothing could replace her) but it was time to move on and maybe getting another dog would help me feel less depressed. I don't think you shud feel guilty. You have to move on.
