immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) raided six Swift & Co. meat processing plants in six states, and arrested a ton of illegals. but not for being illegal aliens, but for ID theft. the managers who hired them didnt get arrested for hiring them either. now the unions want the illegals pardoned because they claim that during the investigation th federal agents violated their civil rights. so now we are more concerned about the civil rights of illegals than those of the citizens and others who came legally. we have to bust these guys on ID theft charges because just being illegal isnt enough anymore for the federal gov. does america exist anymore or is it just a big blob in north america? will it soon become politically incorrect to call it "America", because it would offend mexicans and canadians? it will be the first "country" on earth without a name, because giving it a name may offend foreigners.

This is an interesting story, thanks for pointing it out. There are some funny things going on, I agree.

Swift had been cooperating with Homeland Security to check id's through a computer database called Basic Pilot, and at least 700 employees had quit when their status was reexamined by Swift. The gov't decided to conduct the raids despite Swift's continuing cooperation, and then Chertoff held a press conference.

"Homeland security officials emphasized that only the company’s workers — not the company — had been charged with wrongdoing, though the investigation is continuing. They said Swift’s situation demonstrated the need for a temporary worker program, such as the one advocated by President Bush, to ensure that companies have access to foreign workers." http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/14/washington/14immig.html

I believe the feds created a dramatic incident to highlight the need for some changes in the law, and, in particular to make a public case for a temporary worker program and also to advocate for an integrated federal database that will contain more information about each person in the US than the government needs.

Sixty five of the illegals will be prosecuted for the felony of ID theft, and the rest are being deported for the status offense of being an illegal, which is a misdemeanor.

I couldn't find out anything about the union protests, but political correctness will have little to do the result in these cases; the workers are all being deported or charged with ID theft.

Two or three things are likely to happen, and I don't like any of them. The first is the passage of new temporary worker legislaton, the second is the integration of databases with little or no privacy protections, and the third may be some sort of electronic or chip id for everyone.

You can't ask intelligent questions on the Political forum. They just get buried by all the name calling questions.

I heard about this case this morning and I agree the Unions are stupid and that the company officials should have been arrested also. I also feel the illegal immigrants shouldn't be let off scout free. They stole legitimate Americans ssn#'s.

(As for the America part. I feel all of us on this side of the world are Americans. Canada is part of North America and Mexico is part of Central America. And I have always felt we were a bit uppity for calling ourselves Americans without consideration of our Northern and Southern neighbors. The actual name of our part of North America is the United States of America and unfortunately we never gave ourselves a more unifying name. And that's why we have to call ourselves Americans. But I feel we should never forget that the Mexicans and Canadians are actually Americans also. I'm not saying we shouldn't have borders, because we should, but that we should never forget we are actually ALL Americans.)

A police officer is had to uphold our guidelines. which ability, if he suspects there is an criminality taking position, he might want to look at it. Now, unlawful immigration IS, by definition, unlawful. If an officer replaced into to be noted as out to a area the position abuse replaced into reported, and he has a reason to believe the electorate are unlawful, then he will refer the case to the immigration branch. it truly is going to likely be their jurisdiction to look at it extra. So, to respond to your question, unlawful immigrants can get into 'difficulty' at the same time as reporting different crimes, at the same time with relations violence.
