The only way you can really tell is if you go have it looked at. Last summer I fell and I thought I broke my ankle it got huge and I had a knot on it and the bruised really bad I just knew I had broken it but when I had it looked at it was just sprained really bad and not broken. Good luck keep ice on it and keep your ankle up.

If you want to be really sure, you need an Xray. Even with a broken ankle, some people can still manage to walk.

Recently had a swollen ankle and went to a podiatrist for the 1st time. It's normal to have a physical exam?
She said because the inflammation was not due to injury,it could be due to a systemic problem & wanted to check my glands. She palpated my neck, underarm and torso.I kept my under shorts on,but when she went to check my glands in the lower area she pulled them aside and prodded certain areas and examined my testicles.I had never been examined by a woman before.Never expected this from a foot doctor. She seemed to be professional, but the exam of my lower area lasted for what seemed like forever. Had to give urine sample, but blood work was scheduled for future app't that I never went,'cause swelling went away and she said she might have to do more exams.

No you need to get x-rays. Even if you know you broke it you would still have to see a doctor to get the break checked because if the bones are not in the proper postition the doc has to set them to the right position so they heal properly. See a doc and get this checked out if you even remotely think it may be broken before you do any further damage to that leg/foot.

make sure it is not swollen and if it is see if you can walk on it if you can and it hurts then you probably just twisted it but if it continues to hurt for maybe some weeks or so then just go and get it checked out
