Aubrey finds out that the captain of the other ship is alive, and decides to escort them. Why? Didn't the other captain surrender?

Actually, there are 21 books in the series.

The 21st book was never finished.

The movie is a combination of a couple of the books. The French Doctor was really the French Captian. The French planned on taking back the ship from the British and that's why Captain Aubrey turned his ship around to follow them.

Movie buff is correct. I found it interesting that they changed the protagoinists to the French from who it was in the book--The Americans.

no, he found out the the DOCTOR was dead and he had to go follow them because they had no doctor to tend all their wounded people. he escorts them because he has the really good doctor who got shot.
