strings are huge. some are open and closed so the closed ones have a circumference not length...but the others are big, very big in some cases

How long do you want it to be? You can cut string to whatever length you need, if the ball is big enough. If you've asked someone a question hoping they will give you a finite answer, eg; "how long will the human race last," and they reply,"How long is a piece of string", it means there is no specific answer.

It depends on the piece of string, naturally. But, in general, a string has a bit of elastic give to it. You want to let the string lay slack, but as close to straight as possible. If you pull it taught, you may get a longer measurement than you were looking for.
