Newspapers try to use middle names for infamous people so that innocent people with the same first and last name don't get mistaken for the bad guys.
I looked on a social security death index,
http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi
Lee Oswald: 4 people
John Booth: 473 people
Mark Chapman: 22 people
I've seen serial killers with 3 names for the same reason. On a minor note, whenever our newspaper publishes the names of men picked up in a hooker sting (A lady deputy sheriff dresses up like a hooker and they arrest all the men who offer her money for sex), they use all three names.

James Earl Ray
Sirhan Bishara Sirhan
Leon Frank Czolgosz
Charles Julius Guiteau
are some more assassins, but it's not a coincidence. Many people have three names.

Are you saying there is a connection between names and mental dysfunction?
Possibly some sort of psychological condition, such as identity crisis or dual personality disorder ?
Maybe it's that the assasins don't really know their true self, because they can use different names in different social circles, or mabye they create a different personality for each name ?
One personality is an upstanding member of society, the other a cold blooded killer.

The media uses it, to there advantage. If they use 3 names, it helps them know its an assin(sp)
if they use just first and last name of someone its a serial killer. Im sure im not explaining this 100% correctly, but hopefully you will get the just of... it has to do with media.

Only successful assasins? hah, well i suppose there could be some inkling of a connection related to some psychological glitch but I think a strong argument could be made against this. Citing only 3 examples doesn't warrant a whole lot of consideration.

John Wayne Gacy has 3 names and is a serial killer.
So, that theory is not always true.
