No. It is not a good idea to use a cover. This is what I was told when I called the distributor that sells my company our outside units.
The outside A.C. units are made to take any weather conditions that comes it's way. Putting a cover on one, prevents it from breathing properly and lets condensation build up and rust to form quickly. One of the most common reasons that the compressors inside A.C. units burn out is because the cover is forgotten and still left on the unit, the first time that it is ran in the summer time. Some companies will even void their warranty if they find out that a cover was used on their product. No company that make A.C. units sell these covers. They are all produced by separate companies.

Hope this helps. God Bless.

An outside central air unit should be covered in the winter months to protect the unit from heavy snowfall damage or ice damage that may fall off the roof. You should cover it with a tarp but leave room near the bottom of the unit to be left unwrapped ( about 2 to 3 inches) for air circulation to prevent premature rusting. As soon as winter is over remove the tarp.

I stopped covering mine because critters would make nests under the cover (chew right through it). I think a good compromise is to place something over the top (like a sheet of ply-wood and place a brick on it to hold it down. That's what I've done lately (the moisture freezing in the fins is a good point).

Central AC units should always be covered when not in use it keep them clean, they could also be cleaned before you start them back up.... they are built to withstand snow, wind, rain, sun, and extreme heat & cold BUT not dirt and debris ~ dirty coils will result in more wear and tear on the compressor and fans so you will have to replace it sooner or have expensive repairs; higher operating cost and inadequate cooling.

Window AC’s should be removed…

wall AC’s should be covered from the inside and out to keep drafts out and coils clean…

AC window units?
You should a cover them because they are an open source for Heat to leave your house. Sealing them with a plastic Trash bag and duct tape would be the easiest way.

My wife and I cover the face of our AC every year and it reduces any drafts that can come through the AC. Nothing bad has ever happened by covering the AC.

I recommend covering your AC.

Take care,

Well if it is in a window, i would suggest taking it out...as the cold air from outside will creep through.

I'm not sure about the kind that are stuck right in the wall. I suppose by covering it you COULD get moisture inside and create mildew problems. ..... if you dont feel a draft, i wouldnt worry about it.

It is a good idea because moisture can get into the machine and if it freezes the expansion of the water into ice can cause damage.

Good Luck!!!
