when spyware is installed on your machine you don't have to reformat computer! no way. you only reformat when you have virus and it messed everything up. spyware is easilly removed with good spyware remover or manually (but this way you need to know how to do that). here's a list of 74 anti-spyware programs reviews and downloads:

Get at least 2 different spyware detection/removal programs. I recommend AdAware and Spybot. Run one, then the other, after updating them.
Free versions are ok if you scan manually at regular intervals. Most purchased progs have live scanning for the lazy.

The Norton Spyware Scan from the Yahoo toolbar is good. Spybot Search and Destroy is also good. Both are free.
