Sure the discovery of fire isn't an invention, but the technique of rubbing two sticks together to create fire is, or the invention of the fire bow is an invention, any idea that uses the creative thought process to simulate a force of nature with an artificial means is in my books a invention.
Number 1. The invention of the creation of fire (not the discovery)
Number 2. The invention of Agriculture in the stone age
Number 3. The invention of Metallurgy in 4300 B.C. (copper age)
If none of my answers can be called an inventions then the wheel can't be called a invention either.

Though not in the top 5, do not underestimate "air-conditioning". It has allowed the southern states to flourish. Of course, I was born in Minnesota and now live in Texas where we have a month or so of 100's each summer. I may be a bit biased.
Now if only they had an invention to make "Texans" tolerable.

The printing press. Think of it as the internet of its day, and without it, we'd still be in the dark ages.
