...although I cant recall any African countries saying "Thanks, Britain, for also bringing an end to it". Did France, Portugal, Spain, Brazil, Holland, or representatives of any African or Arab countries stand up and say, "We're sorry as well", and did any African or Arab country say "Actually, we still practice slavery, we're sorry, we'll put an end to it right now"?

That's pretty big of Tony Blair, but why doesn't he, Bush and others in Europe apologize for the constant bombing and killing that they're still doing in Africa?
The deal is that Africa today is a direct result of what these countries did and continue to do. The only countries they don't bomb are the ones where they have people who they install or manipulate into office running those countries. Everyone else gets bombed. Africa may never regain the prominence it held in the world prior to slavery. One can even see the damage done in Africa after the Berlin Conference of 1885 in which the European powers carved up Africa and then followed it up with a killing spree that's so criminal it's not even talked about. This conference was the final straw that broke the back of Africa and things haven't been right since.
No matter how one looks at it, the fact on this planet is that the problems in Asia, the middle east, Latin America, Caribbean or anywhere else with people of color all started when they met the white man. If you don't believe, look up the history of any of these former colonies and you will see a past and present history of death and destruction of the native people when the white man showed up.
As for the Africans who are committing genocide against white land owners, they are rebelling and killing whites who stole land and continue to exploit them. Considering that whites are not indigenous to Africa and considering the well documented past and present history of whites killing and stealing in Africa, it's fair to conclude that they stole the land...just look at South Africa. Who in their right mind would not want to kill such a person and speaking of South Africa, was in not whites who had all the weapons and used the most violent means to keep apartheid going. Whites stole the land by killing everyone who fought them and then maintained their control of the land by killing the native people who are entitled to that land by birth right.
The issue about black and arab slavery is a non-issue. All of the rich western European countries and the US built there wealth at the expense of Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Latin America and the killing of countless people in everyone of these places with war, disease and destruction of crops and livestock. This is how these countries amassed their great fortunes. It's easy to accumulate wealth when you enslave people for centuries and do not have to pay for the labor that builds your empire. Every dime made is profit.

But what is the point of him apologising, or anyone for that matter?? If Tony Blair were to apologise would he really mean it?? There is no point in apologising if you do not sincerely and genuinally mean it!! Also in my opinion I don't think it will make any difference if an apology was made. Britain has already accepted that they played a part in the slave trade, and rather than apologise, I think it would proably be better for Britain to set up some kind of memorial to acknowledge the role that Africans played in the development and rise of Britain. At the end of the day without the slave trade it is unlikely that Britain would be where it is today- well it certainly would not have developed at the rate/speed it did without the lave trade. You also have to remember that even though Britain palyed a role in the slave trade we also played a big role in outlawing the slave trade. Thus in a sense we have already admitted that what was done was wrong. Is that not enough?? I am glad to see that you also acknowledge that the Africans too played a role in the slave trade - Black people need to acknowledge that the White people were not entirely to blame, and it is entirely unfair that White people are blamed entirely for the slave trade. Also would it be right for Britain to apologise because in my opinion Britain has not learnt from their mistakes. We think the slave trade is all over, but you only have to look to countries like China to see that slavery is still among us. As a result of this country's greed we frequently send services and manufacturing to China because of lower costs. People are being paid a pittance and living in poverty in China to provide goods for this country and others. In my opinion this too is a form of slavery. Therefore I think it would be hypocritical for Britain to apologise for the slave trade!!

The whole intent behind an apology is not to get an apology in return. Tony Blair saw a wrong and wants to make a formal apology because of what he believes in. This is a commendable action that should be viewed as just that. You make valid points but in general most countries and people could probably find something to apologize if they chose to give it some thought.

Tony Blair did not have to apologise for our ancestor's who went out to conquer the world, regardless of who their killed or hurt / got in the way. It was down to our Ancestor's and Tony Blair should be credited for making attempts to apologise for what happened.
He is right by saying many countriess still have slavery and we as a nation have a moral duty to assist in aiming to get rid of Slavery plus all the back stabbing this and many other countrie endure in to days society. This plus more should be our treaties for the millennium / not war.

I don't think so. But it is more complicated then just apologizing for slavery. In fact, Britain was involved in a great portion of slave trade and a great portion of wars.

Britain should not apologize because slavery ended 200 years ago and we all should have moved on by now. None of our ancestors who were involved in any of that are still alive. I don't like what happened then and even in the recent pass. But the only way you get past it, is leaving it in the past.

Me thinks not, because in their eyes, we did it first, so thats ok.
