He is not on any medicine. Doctor told me to boil bottles and nipples and to stop letting him suck on pacifier so much. What do you think?

Do you breastfeed or is he the only one that has it?
If you breastfeed you need to treat both of you, they call this the ping pong infection because it goes back and forth between the two of you.

For over the counter you can get Gentian Violet form the pharmacy, dip a q-tip in let the baby suck and then feed the baby.

or you can go to the doctor and get Nystatin (they HATE the taste) and some nipple cream for yourself, (monistat will even work but you have to wipe it all off before you feed!~...Big pain in the butt!)

You have to throw away all your nipples and soothers too, big pain in the butt.

Boiling bottles is not enough.

You need to boil pacifiers AT LEAST daily as well. (And not just now, forever, because it can come back and pacifiers are a prime breeding ground).

Dilute Grapefruit Seed Extract (available at health food stores) or vinegar (3 parts water to 1 part vinegar) should be used to wipe out the mouth after each feeding. ONLY until this is cleared up.

ANYTHING that goes in your son's mouth needs to be treated.

You need to (until this is cleared up and for a week or so after wards) wash your laundry in the hottest water possible AND add 1/2 cup vinegar to the final rinse. You can use a fabric softener ball to dispense it. Actually vinegar will make your clothes softer as well, many people like to use it all the time.

Wash toys once a day. (Yeah I know) You may want to limit toys until this is cleared up. Anything that can not be washed should be wiped down with diluted vinegar or Grapefruit Seed Extract (available at health food stores)

Give your son probioticss (like acidophilus) they are available in capsules in most health food stores. They must be kept refrigerated. You should ask for the lactose free ones, but they are hard to find. If you can't find it use the regular but watch your baby for a reaction. Just crack the capsule open and either mix it with the formula or give it on your finger. It tastes good. I breastfeed and my son would just take it off my finger and look for more. This is a great thing for everyone in your family to do all the time. Dosage depends on the pills you get, but it is not a problem to take too much really, just expensive. I take 2 a day for me, and 1/2 capsule twice a day for baby.

Grapefruit Seed Extract can also be taken orally and some people find it works better than probiotics. It can be taken at the same time. Some women with thrush in their nipples report that it worked after 2 or 3 prescription drugs failed (thrush in your nipples is very painful, unlike oral thrush which is generally not painful). I have never taken it so I don't know about dosing or safety in children. Ask at the store or consult a natrupath.

Watch for diaper rash. Any diaper rash that starts of as little dots, about 1/8" in size, or is surround by the same is probably yeast. Treat with dilute Grapefruit Seed Extract, probiotic paste (just mix the inside of the capsules with water). However if no improvement is seen in 24 hours with the diaper rash go to the drugstore and get Yeast infection or Jock Itch or athlete's foot cream and apply once in the morning, once at night, and only a small amount. Use regular cream the rest of the time. I find the yeast diaper rash can get out of hand pretty quickly and doesn't always respond to home remedies unless caught in the beginning.

Prescription anti-fungals do not always work any better than home remedies.

I know this sounds like a lot of work, but you want to nip it in the bud.

I am very suprised that the GP didnt give you any thing for , the suggestion on boiling the bottles and teats is a good one, but you would be better off putting them in a sterilising unit, Thrush in the mouth can also lead to it going down to the nether regions, which can cause nappy rash, there is a medication called Daktarin ( not sure if spelling is correct) hope this is some helpful information to you

Thrush is a fungal infection caused by yeast in the oral cavity. I do recommed boiling everything that he uses now. Once the thrush has cleared up I would throw all the nipples away and get new ones. Whatever you do don't try and rub the white cheesy looking stuff off his tongue. It will cause it to bleed and be infected even more.

I feel for you. My baby has had thrush for two months now. We have been through two bottles of nystatin. It is finally going away on it's own. Try alittle bit of yogurt with active cultures in it. Yogurt is supposed to be very good at getting rid of yeast. Replace all bottles and pacifiers and treat yourself if you are breastfeeding

Thrush is an infection of the mouth caused by the candida fungus, also known as yeast. Candida infection is not limited to the mouth; it can occur in other parts of the body as well, causing diaper rash in infants or vaginal yeast infections in women.

Thrush can affect anyone, though it occurs most often in babies and toddlers, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems.

What Causes Thrush?

Small amounts of the candida fungus are present in the mouth, digestive tract, and skin of most healthy people and are normally kept in check by other bacteria and microorganisms in the body. However, certain illnesses, stress, or medications can disturb the delicate balance, causing the fungus candida to grow out of control, causing infection.

Medications that upset the balance of microorganisms in the mouth and may cause thrush include corticosteroids, antibiotics, and birth control pills. Illnesses or medical situations that make candida infection more likely to develop include uncontrolled diabetes, HIV infection, cancer, dry mouth, or pregnancy (caused by the hormonal changes that occur with pregnancy). People who smoke or wear dentures that don't fit properly also are at increased risk for thrush. In addition, babies can pass the infection to their mothers during breast-feeding.

What Are the Symptoms of Thrush?

Thrush usually develops suddenly, but it may become chronic, persisting over a long period of time. A common sign of thrush is the presence of creamy white, slightly raised lesions in your mouth – usually on your tongue or inner cheeks – but also sometimes on the roof of your mouth, gums, tonsils, or back of your throat. The lesions, which may have a "cottage cheese" appearance, can be painful and may bleed slightly when you scrape them or brush your teeth. In severe cases, the lesions may spread into your esophagus, or swallowing tube, causing:

I didn't really gain any size until I was 6 months ~ I had people saying to me all the time "gee, I didn't even realise you were pregnant" ~ now, at 7+ months I am getting everything from "gee, you're small for 7 months" to "wow, look at YOU, you're HUGE"! The thing is people will have their opinions & usually have to tell you what they think, or what their experience was...it's just one of the ugly parts about being pregnant! Have you started hearing the horror birth stories yet? lol! I just tell them "she's fine (my baby), I'm not feeling so great..." pregnancy hasn't been fun for me. Tell them you & your doctor know you're healthy and all is okay & that should shut them down. What bugs me is that at NO other time in a womans life does ANYONE feel that it's okay to just walk up & comment on your figure EXCEPT when you're pregnant ~ it seems that saying "oh my you're HUGE" is suddenly acceptable!! HELLO PEOPLE ~ IT'S NOT!!! =o))

Yes. Boil everything daily after your replace nipples and pacifers. If you have a bottle sanitizer, just sanitze bottles, nipples and pacifiers nightly.
They don't like the medication but it works. It may take a month or so.
Also if the pacifer or bottle is dropped, your mouth is not the way to clean it to give it back to the baby. Wash off with water.

there is a medecine called Nystatin that is administered thru the mouth, dr needs to prescribe it. My 4 month old son is currently on it. Also tylenol helps relieve the pain because their mouths can get quite tender and its hard for them to eat
