Chances are that your period is just late. When your period is delayed the blood stays inside longer and can clot, which is completely normal. Something nickel-sized is probably nothing to worry about unless it happens on a regular basis.

If it happens again, examine the clot. try to squish it gently (between pieces of toilet paper if you are squeamish). If it complete disintegrates, it was just a clot. If it feels firm like a piece of tissue (body tissue, not paper tissue) then wash it off (I know this sounds a little gross). If it completely or mostly dissolves in water then it was just a clot. If you wash it off and it turns out to be pink or white, then put it in a plastic baggy and bring it to your doctor just to be sure. You will want to either bring it immediately or refrigerate it until you can get to your doctor so it doesn't rot.

I have a lot of menstrual problems myself--delayed periods, 5 week long periods, etc.--and often experience clotting. Only once did I have something fall out (and that's what it did--literally fell out into the toilet paper) that I thought was more than a clot. I didn't wash it off but meant to bring it to my doctor. Finally I decided to throw it out, which was stupid, I really should have brought it to him, maybe he could have figured out what was wrong with me.

I talked with my aunt later on who also had major menstrual issues until she had a hysterectomy (to eliminate all the problems once and for all) and she said she had problems with tissue falling out sometimes too. This CAN be normal! The lining of the uterus is blood and tissue and it is possible that the tissue can fall out by itself, but if this is happening to you then you should probably just bring a piece to the doctor for your own peace of mind.

Good luck!
