You bid based off of the number of spades, high card, low card and jokers you have.

You go by how many books you think u can get...
ex.- say you don't have a certain suit like hearts but u have 6 spades u can assume that u will get two books just from hearts because you'll be cutting hearts. Then the rest is just a guess. U normally count aces and high spades as a book.
ex.- ur hand S-spades H-Hearts C-Clubs D-Diamonds
Big joker, AofS, KofS, 10ofS, 4ofS, 3ofS, AofH, 7ofH, KofC, 3ofC, QofD, 10ofD, 4ofD
I would bid this hand as 4 definites and two possibles. So i would tell my partner that i could possibly get 5 books.

First you analyze your hand and see how many tricks you want/can take if you don't want any and want to get 100 points and your partner can cover you, go nil. If you and your partner think you can take 10 tricks then go ten for two-hundred. If anyone on your team goes nil you can bid again once everyone else has made thier final bid. the minimal bid for yourself if your partner goes nil is 3. Hope I helped!

You have to guesstimate how many tricks you are going to take. For example, if you have the Ace and King of spade, you know that you will take at least two tricks. If you have the ace of any suit, you can almost guarantee another trick. It takes some time to figure out a system for yourself.
