As a college professor, this is a question I regularly wrestle with. The KEY here is to understand that there are 2 types of learners: auditory and visual.
Auditory learners are able to retain information they hear, while visual learners are able to retail information they see. So it's a good idea to combine a bit of both.
Now when it comes to the use of visual aids, you don't want to go overboard because it can detract from what you have to say and your point. So the KEY is to use them where you feel they're appropriate. Visual aids should be used to enhance the learning process and to help further explain something you want to say.
There's no rule that says "Use a visual aid here," but rather it's a judgement call. However, I would suggest using visual aids as a way to direct someones attention so you can point to it while describing it, and/or to illustrate a relationship or concept.
Just remember the old adage, "A picture is worth a thousand words."

in most cases, it would be the information that will help enhance, and further support the information you are trying to get across. The use of visual aids also helps reach those folks who retain info. that is visual. Also good to use when making comparisons. Hope this is helpful.

Some children do not know or good with words.
So they learn from pictures.
If they were not good with words or pictures
Then they learn it from songs.
As they grew older they learn the lights of humanity.
With time they will perfect it with lights, words, songs and pictures into 3-D images as living words as human intelligent with IQ.
Do we understand how our creator got fed up with living human kind in planet of apes.
Communicate in lights of humanity.
We don't know.
In words.
We don't know.
In song .
we don't know .
In pictures.
we don't know too.
Until our creator left behind a piece of question with those "Three little words" on 'Who are you" for each and every living human kind to come up with an answer for making a monkey out of ourselves in planet of apes.
Why do we keep on calling "Father! Father! and did not do the things that our creator tells us what to do in planet of apes.
How embarassing with those keep on yellling "Father! Father!" with just hearsay on the graetness of our creator in making a monkey out of themselves in plamet of apes.
It is a good jokes on living human kind on being played out by our creator in making a monkey out of ourselves in planet of apes.
