You need to at the very least install a virus detection program. There are lots of pay ones out there (mcafee, norton, panda come to mind).
I use http://free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti-virus-free/lng/us/tpl/v5 which is an excellent Free Antivirus program.

Leave Microsoft.com, and download anti-virus software. Even though I do use Windows, you should never trust Microsoft.

Microsoft.com runs behind 15,000 Akamai GNU/Linux computers, that they lease.

Hotmail.com has always run GNU/Linux, since before Microsoft bought them. Now, it's on 15,000 GNU/Linux computers.

MSN.com runs on 15,000 GNU/Linux computers because it is virus proof, runs upto 50X faster, and one Linux box replaces upto 12 Microsoft boxes!

So, get http://pclinuxos.com with 1900 FREE offices suites, browsers, games, apps.
