who was the other?? - it wasn't Margaret Beckett as she has never led a political party. if you read the article it refers to her as being one of two women to hold one of the 4 great offices, as she is the current secretary of state for the foreign office. Thanks to all who suggested Shirley Williams, she sounds like the most plausible answer.

Cheers

It WAS Margaret Beckett. She was Deputy Leader of the Labour Party when John Smith died, and became Leader temporarily until Tony Blair was elected.

This is confirmed by wikipedia:

Shirley Williams never led the SDP - my memory is that their three leaders were Roy Jenkins, David Owen and Robert Maclennan. She was leader of the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords (but not Party leader)

I suspect the Wikipedia article refers to Margaret Beckett, who temporarily assumed the leadership of the Labour Party upon the death of John Smith.

It must be Shirley Williams. She defected from Labour and was one of 4 defectors who founded the SDP's. She did not lead the party though as that was David Owen.

She was leader of the Liberal Democrats in the Lords after the SDPs developed into the Lib Dems, so this is what they are possibly referring to.

There are other Female party leaders in other Nations but not the UK.

She is also the only woman to have served as Prime Minister, one of only two women to have led a major political party in the UK, and one of only two to have held any of the four great offices of state (the second being Margaret Beckett)[citation needed]. Undoubtedly one of the most significant British politicians in recent political history, she is also one of the most divisive, being loved and loathed on different sides of the political spectrum.

MARGARET BECKETT!

Read on mate :)
