he doesnt have a record besides being in juvinile detention when he was 15 or 16 (he's 23)

$1,000 is the limit for grand larceny, which is a felony. If you say approx. $1,000 then you should get a lawer if his employer decides to press charges and dispute the items value, then it would just be petty theft which is still a big deal, but at least its not a felony.

The least that will happen is he gets fired. He will have to pay for the item or return it, may go to jail but unlikely if it is his first offense. It is a felony charge so he will have a hard time finding quality work in the future. It will effect him greatly. I suggest you dump him.

In most states this is a felony, therefore it is punishable by serving time in a state prison. Whether this happens will be based on his previous record. He could get probation, or community service. In any case he will most likely be terminated from his job.
